Reggie Pace joins Bon Iver!

20 06 2011

Excited to let everyone know that our esteemed trombonist Reggie Pace just joined the band of the mighty Bon Iver! Wanted to drop everyone a line today, because tonight (Monday, June 20, 2011) you can catch him and the rest of the band on The Colbert Report, and tomorrow (Tuesday, June 21, 2011) they will be on the Jimmy Fallon show!

And if that wasn’t enough—Reggie’s coming back to RVA on Thursday to play with us at Balliceaux for MONDO ITALIA DANCE PARTY!

Don’t worry, Reggie’s still in the band–despite the whole, “I’m a rockstar and only eat things with truffles or truffle oil in them” thing. I’m using this opportunity to write some new tunes for our next record.

And we’re all getting our truffle hunting skills on point!

New Year, New Album, New York

5 01 2010

Happy New Year to all! Glows has several exciting things going on, and I think it’s only proper to enlighten the people.

First, on January 19, we will be playing at The Stone in New York. Matana Roberts is curating the whole month of shows, and was kind enough to invite us along with Fight the Big Bull to present a night of music from Richmond. Glows will play at 8pm and Fight the Big Bull at 10pm.

All the deets are on The Stone’s website.

Then from Friday January 22 to Sunday January 24 we will be recording material for our next record. The new record will focus on material that’s been performed live often, but has yet to be put to tape. Right now the song list looks like this:

Beach of the War Gods
The Silence
Revolver
Manhunt
Caliber 9
Gary Glitter > Turtle

There will be more, and it will rule! The best part about this recording is that we will finally be laying down tracks with John Lilley on sax. He’s been a HUGE part of our musical growth, and a phenomenon that has only been experienced LIVE thus far.

We will cap off the last night of recording by playing a show at Commercial Taphouse. A good and just musical week.

Also, you might be wondering what happened to my writing about film. Well, for the past year, I have been writing for RVANews. Most articles are about older films that I love, with a few new ones thrown in for good measure. RVANews wants me to focus on newer films, meaning that my focus on older gems will return to this blog. The nerdery shall continue!

MAY 22!!!!

18 05 2009

We’ve been looking forward to this show for a while, and this Friday it’s finally happening! Fight the Big Bull, Glows with Matana Roberts sitting in, and Matana Roberts solo with video projection! I’ll put the poster below, and it will stay here until after the show. I hope to see everyone out at MUSE. It’s gonna be sweet!

Also, to find out more about the bands and the venue, head over to RVAJazz and check out the “Featured Gig” section.

Finally, this show would not be possible without some very generous local sponsors, which you can find by clicking on their links to the right. Richmond Jazz Society, Ipanema, RVAJazz, and RVANews rule hard!

The Future of Music

18 09 2008

For all interested parties, the future of music is currently being exhibited in the form of Kidz Eight Track over at RVANews. Kids writing great original and highly unpredictable music that is as challenging as it is rewarding. That sounds like a bold statement…until you hear Caleb the BitCrusher!

The logical progression from the Eight Track, which is an on-going competition between local bands, Kidz edition deals with younger students of music and the results of learning by creating.  It’s amazing how great this stuff is, and it’s even better when you compare it to the music of today (all genres.)  While these songs might not have the polish needed for the Disney Channel, they can arguably compete with some of experimental and pitchfork music’s finest.  Based on pure sound, some of the tracks would not be out of place on a Wire Magazine CD, yet they were created by kids under the age of 13.  I don’t say that as any kind of an insult, but as a compliment to the kids and to their brave curiosity.

Watch out for more great composers like Alec Tubbs and AJ Illustre in the next couple weeks!
